Celebrating the Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti 2023
Mahatma Gandhi, a name synonymous with truth, nonviolence, and simplicity, was born on October 2, 1869. His birthday is not just a day on the calendar; it's a celebration of his profound impact on India and the world. Gandhi Jayanti, as it is known, is a day dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of this revered figure whose philosophy, often referred to as "Satyagraha," continues to inspire generations worldwide.
A Tribute from Prime Minister Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his reverence on this special occasion, saying, "I bow to Mahatma Gandhi on the special occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. His timeless teachings continue to illuminate our path. Mahatma Gandhi's impact is global, motivating the entire humankind to further the spirit of unity and compassion. May we always work towards fulfilling his dreams. May his thoughts enable every youngster to be the agent of change he dreamt of, fostering unity and harmony all over."
Swachh Bharat Diwas: A National Cleanliness Initiative
On Gandhi Jayanti, India will also commemorate 'Swachh Bharat Diwas' or 'Swachhta Diwas.' This nationwide effort was spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who collaborated with fitness influencer Ankit Baiyanpuriya for a unique cleanliness initiative.
In response to Modi's call, individuals from diverse backgrounds, including politicians and students, actively participated in the 'Swachhata hi Seva' campaign. Multiple ministries, government agencies, and social organizations joined hands to champion the cause of cleanliness.
Blending Fitness and Well-being into Cleanliness
Prime Minister Modi shared a 4-minute video on his official account, showcasing the importance of the campaign. In his post, he stated, "Today, as the nation focuses on Swachhata, Ankit Baiyanpuriya and I did the same! Beyond just cleanliness, we blended fitness and well-being into the mix. It is all about that Swachh and Swasth Bharat vibe!"
"One Hour of Shramdaan" for Cleanliness
In a recent episode of "Mann Ki Baat," Modi called upon all citizens to engage in "one hour of shramdaan" for cleanliness on October 1. He described it as a "Swachhanjali" (tribute) to Mahatma Gandhi on the eve of his birth anniversary.
Leaders Leading by Example
Union Home Minister Amit Shah actively participated in a cleanliness drive in Ahmedabad, symbolically using a broom to emphasize the importance of cleanliness. Similarly, BJP chief JP Nadda also joined the cleanliness initiative, taking part in the drive in Delhi's Jhandewalan area.
