Nagpur Violence Updates: CM Fadnavis, Dy CM Shinde Call Unrest a ‘Pre-Planned Conspiracy

The night of March 17 brought a wave of unrest to Nagpur as clashes erupted, prompting a heavy response from the police. On Tuesday, Nagpur Police reported that they had detained over 50 people due to the unrest. They are carefully examining CCTV footage and tracking social media to find others connected to the violence, which reportedly started from rumors about a holy text being desecrated during a protest by a right-wing group that was calling for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb.

Police Response and Curfew Measures

City Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal reassured everyone that things are back to normal. “The situation is now peaceful. A curfew is in place in areas covered by 11 police stations. Everything is under control,” he told ANI.

He went on to say, “We’ve taken more than 50 individuals into custody. Anyone identified through CCTV footage or social media as being involved in violence, property damage, or public disorder will be chased down and arrested.”

The Commissioner responded to claims about the police not acting quickly enough, stating that officers were on the scene right from the start. Sadly, the clashes resulted in injuries to 33 policemen.

Given the rising tensions, a curfew under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been put into effect across various police districts, including Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodharanagar, and Kapilnagar.

Sequence of Events

The violence first broke out in the Chitnis Park area of Mahal around 7:30 PM on Monday, where stone-pelting led to injuries for both civilians and police. The unrest quickly spread to Kotwali and Ganeshpeth, escalating through the evening. Nearly 1,000 people participated in widespread rioting, vandalism, and arson, resulting in important damage to vehicles and homes.

According to the Police Commissioner, the most intense violence occurred between 8:00 PM and 8:30 PM, requiring immediate police intervention.

The chaos later moved to the Hansapuri area, where vandals damaged shops, set vehicles on fire, and hurled objects at buildings. By 10:30 PM, new clashes broke out along Old Bhandara Road, with mobs setting multiple vehicles on fire and damaging houses and a medical clinic.

Political and Community Reactions

Following the violence, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari called on residents to uphold peace and communal harmony.

Reports from PTI indicate that the unrest was sparked when Bajrang Dal members held a demonstration near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mahal. Rumors about a Quran being burned during the protest ignited anger among the Muslim community, especially as videos of the protest circulated online. A formal complaint about the alleged desecration was filed at Ganeshpeth Police Station later that evening.
